Heavy Highway Estimator – North Carolina

Full-Time | DOT / Municipal / Design-Build Projects

We are seeking an experienced Heavy Highway Estimator to join our team and lead the pursuit of DOT, municipal, and design-build transportation projects across North Carolina. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented construction professional with deep knowledge of earthwork, grading, paving, drainage, and structural scopes.


What You’ll Do

  • Lead estimating efforts for heavy civil transportation projects, including NCDOT and municipal work.

  • Review and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents to define scope, risks, and opportunities.

  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and cost analyses for both self-performed and subcontracted work.

  • Manage subcontractor and vendor pricing to ensure competitive, comprehensive proposals.

  • Collaborate with project managers and field leaders to validate production rates, logistics, and constructability.

  • Develop bid strategies, schedules, and value-added alternatives to strengthen proposals.

  • Prepare and present detailed estimate reviews to senior leadership.

  • Mentor junior estimators and help advance department processes and tools.

  • Utilize industry-standard estimating platforms such as HCSS HeavyBid, B2W (Bid2Win), Bluebeam, and Excel.


What We’re Looking For

  • 3–7+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil, highway, or transportation construction.

  • Strong understanding of NCDOT specifications and bidding procedures.

  • Proficient with heavy civil estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid, B2W, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar).

  • Ability to read and interpret complex plans and technical documents.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Self-motivated, detail-driven, and able to work against deadlines in a fast-paced environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with design-build estimating or alternative technical concepts (ATCs).

  • Prior field experience in earthwork, structures, or roadway operations.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (preferred but not required).
